Domestic radiotherapy system to achieve precise dose control

On December 26, the reporter learned from the Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the “Intensity and Precision Radiotherapy Planning System” independently developed by the team was tested by the State Food and Drug Administration, and its system function, safety and performance met the national standards. The precision control of the radiotherapy dose error is less than 2% after the precise positioning of the tumor lesions. It becomes the first domestic system to pass the national standard of the system. It is of great significance to improve the technical level of radiotherapy equipment in China and break the foreign monopoly.

Radiotherapy software is the "soul" of precision radiotherapy. The radiotherapy device relies on the command and control of software, otherwise it is difficult to operate and effective treatment. The core problem of precision radiotherapy is to protect the normal cells while killing the cancer cells. This requires that the tumor be focused on the tumor during radiotherapy, and the exact dose should be given. Previously, the team's self-developed precision radiotherapy system, the "Kirin Knife" series of radiotherapy software, has solved the problem of "aligning tumor lesions" and achieved sub-millimeter positioning.

“In order to meet the 'dose accurate' requirements, we have applied the innovative neutron transport calculation theory and technology to the 'Kirin Knife' radiotherapy planning system, thus achieving a breakthrough in key technical difficulties.” Researcher Song Gang Tell the reporter of the Chinese Journal of Science.

According to the data, in 2015, there were nearly 4.3 million new cases of cancer in China and nearly 2.8 million deaths. The research team relies on multidisciplinary research in nuclear physics and computer technology. In recent years, it has achieved breakthroughs in key technical difficulties including rapid and accurate calculation of human dose, reverse optimization of treatment options, and tumor localization and tracking.

With the increase of tumor incidence and clinical demand, the country should vigorously promote the localization of radiotherapy devices, and the input and development of radiotherapy software should receive more attention."
