A new way to prevent postprandial blood sugar surge

Release date: 2014-08-12

Postprandial blood glucose surges are plaguing many diabetic patients. Current research suggests that blood glucose peaks in diabetic patients have been associated with cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, kidney failure and retinal damage.

Now, a new study at Tel Aviv University proposes a new way to suppress these fatal postprandial blood glucose surges: eating whey protein concentrate before breakfast. Whey Protein Concentrate is a by-product of cheese production, fresh whey, which is enriched by evaporation, concentration and spray drying after removing part of lactose and ash. It is important to eat whey protein before meals, in addition to reducing the peak blood sugar after meals, but also improve the body's response to insulin. High milk intake has been associated with low risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, while milk whey protein increases the production of the gut hormone-glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which stimulates insulin secretion. This, in turn, will reduce the rise in blood sugar after meals.

We hypothesized that consumption of whey protein before meals would stimulate GLP-1 production, enhance insulin secretion, and have a hypoglycemic effect on type 2 diabetes. The study recruited 15 patients with type 2 diabetes at the Wolfson Medical Center who were randomly assigned to receive 250 ml of water (containing 50 g of whey) or placebo and given a standardized high glycemic index breakfast, intended to produce Maximum postprandial blood glucose peak.

Blood samples were taken 30 minutes before the meal, ie when eating whey protein or a placebo drink. Blood samples were taken at breakfast time and after 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 minute intervals.

The researchers found that after whey preload (pre-meal consumption of whey protein), blood glucose levels were reduced by 28%, insulin and GLP-1 responses were also significantly higher, and early insulin response increased by 96%.

New research confirms that whey protein is a new method used to lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. Based on the results of this study, researchers are considering a long-term clinical trial to test the long-term benefits of whey protein consumption for diabetic patients.
