The Reasons and Prevention of "Zizi" in Maize

The phenomenon of corn tiller occurred in many plots of corn in this year's main corn producing areas in our province. Recently, many farmers have received phone calls or text messages asking about the emergence of corn crops. In this regard, we asked Cao Jingsheng, researcher of the Institute of Maize Research, Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, to explain why corn would appear as “dumplings” and what would be the output of corn. Questions such as impact give answers. I hope our work can help you in agricultural production. --editor

1. Why does corn appear to have "dumplings"?

Maize is an annual herb of the genus Gramineae and has characteristics of tillering. After long-term cultivation and domestication of mankind and artificial selection of varieties without tillering or less tillering, ordinary cultivated corn has little or no tillering under general conditions. The gene, tb1, is a gene associated with domestication; this gene negatively regulates the growth of tufts of pods, and is only expressed in 50% of maize in teosinte (deep euchamatosus, a close ancestor of maize). In existing corn, the expression level of the gene is not positive or negative, but it is the difference between strength and weakness. In the case where the competition between space and nutrients is not very intense, some unbridled breeds (lines) will also give birth.

There are axillary buds at the leaf axils of each node of the corn. The rest of the axillary buds can be developed except the 5-8 leaf buds at the top of the plant. The upper axillary buds can develop into the ear, while the axillary buds near the base of the surface form a tiller. . Because the apical dominance of corn plants is relatively strong, the process of forming tiller at the base of axillary buds is generally inhibited. Therefore, the production of corn plants on the production of tillers is relatively rare.

2. The time when the "mule" appeared

Maize tillering may occur earliest at the germination and emergence stage; the tillering occurring after the flowering stage of the panicle generally does not have a great impact on the yield, and no control is necessary. In most cases, corn tiller occurs around the seedling stage and the big bell-mouth stage, which is the growth period when corn is sensitive to water and fertilizers. Therefore, it is very unfavorable for the growth and yield of corn.

3, "dumplings" appear parts

Maize tiller usually occurs in the root, which is the critical soil surface or slightly below the soil surface. The cultivating soil in the cultivator has a good inhibitory effect on the parturition of this part. Due to disease, the delivery or branching presents as a symptom of whole plant, that is, the growth of tillering at most sections, and the individual also shows the phenomenon of dwarfing and tillering. Delivery due to diseases can only be prevented by preventing diseases.

4, why this year, "Xunzi" and more

This year, due to low temperature and rain in early spring, the sowing time of corn is generally 15-20 days later than normal, and the emergence period is more than 10 days later. Therefore, the post-emergence temperature is higher than the post-emergence temperature, and the time of “seedlings” is short, and soil moisture is better in the early stage. The pressure of growth competition is small. In the past, there was no childbirth or a small number of births. In the case of favorable delivery this year, childbirth also occurred.
