In order to give Parkinson's patients a glass of water, he developed a robotic arm.

Release date: 2016-04-20

Denis Huen's grandfather suffered from serious Parkinson's disease 30 years ago. Now the old man is 89 years old. Not only can he not take care of himself in normal life, even eating is a very difficult thing. Pick up the cup and drink water to the elderly. It is simply a difficult task than going to heaven.

Parkinson's patients like Uncle Denis Huen are not a minority in the world. Nearly 10 million people are suffering from the pain and suffering of Parkinson's syndrome. For them, the normal life in our eyes. It can only be a luxury.

It was all seen by Denis Huen, so he began to think about how to make the life of Parkinson's patients more convenient, so that Grandpa could pick up a glass of water effortlessly, and finally Denis Huen decided to make a robotic arm.

In December 2014, Denis Huen and the team made an early version of the product and named it MedEXO Robotics, who wanted to create a robotic arm that Parkinson's patients could easily manipulate.

After several iterations, they made a fairly good prototype in October 2015 and let Denis Huen's grandfather test the product as the first "angel user."

“This is the first time in more than 30 years that he has picked up his cup with his own arm,” Denis Huen said excitedly.

The reporter saw Denis Huen from Hong Kong at the Asian Hardware Innovation Competition held by Technology. He said, "The function and design of the mechanical arm MedEXO Robotics is constantly improving, and the feedback from Grandpa has given the team a lot of help, such as stimulating the movement of the fingers and suppressing the jitter."

MedEXO Robotics can trigger a compression control system in the patient's body, reduce the patient's tremor and improve spontaneous movement, and use the robot to suppress the reaction and movement caused by the disease. According to their calculation, the robotic arm can suppress more than 70% of unconscious shaking.

In the later stages, such devices can record patient data through the APP and adjust their own functions in conjunction with the data to better fit and adapt to the patient. It can also be converted to a new tactile analog feedback system for use in telemedicine diagnostics.

Denis Huen also conducted a small-scale test of the robotic arm, which can help patients complete simple actions such as drinking water and eating.

There are quite a few similar devices on the market, such as gloves for Parkinson's patients, special tableware for patients, bionic technology arms, smart bracelets with big data technology, etc., including some cutting-edge treatment techniques, but No one in the product form is particularly mature.

Denis Huen's desire is to reduce the cost of this technology as much as possible, with a target of around 200 pounds, so that it is possible to benefit more.
