FDA: Fully banned artificial trans fatty acids after 3 years

Release date: 2015-06-23

The US Food and Drug Administration announced on the 16th that artificial trans fat poses a threat to public health and will completely eliminate artificial trans fats in the US food system within three years.

Trans fat, also known as trans fatty acid, has a small amount of natural trans fat in beef and mutton, milk and its products. The main source of artificial trans fat is partially hydrotreated vegetable oil. This oil has the advantages of high temperature resistance, non-deterioration and long storage. It is used in fried chicken, French fries, popcorn, frozen pizza, biscuits, cakes and other foods. universal.

The US Drug Administration issued a statement on the same day saying that the use of partially hydrogenated oil in human food is no longer "considered to be generally safe" based on a comprehensive assessment of existing scientific evidence. Therefore, the food manufacturer will be given 3 years to adjust the product formula. After June 18, 2018, unless approved, the processed foods on the US market will no longer allow the addition of hydrogenated oil.

The US Drug Administration also said that this regulation only involves artificial trans fats, and some small trans fats naturally present in meat and dairy products cannot be avoided and are not affected by this regulation.

Stephen Osterov, acting director of the US Drug Administration, said the ban is expected to reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease and prevent thousands of fatal heart attacks every year.

Artificial trans fats were once considered a breakthrough because they extend the shelf life of fried and baked goods, coupled with low cost. But in 2002, a third-party independent study from the American Academy of Medicine concluded that trans fats are not good for health and there is no safety standard for trans fat intake. The recommendation is that the lower trans fat intake. The better.

In 2006, the US Drug Administration required that the trans fat content be indicated on the food packaging. Since then, many US food manufacturers and some food and beverage businesses have voluntarily reduced or phased out trans fats.
