It is inconvenient for the elderly to wear this kind of clothes with electronic muscles.

Hey, we all get older. Whenever you are young, you will become more energetic. One day, you will become a two-story building. You will be panting. You will walk over a kilometer and you will be physically overdrawn, even a grandfather and granddaughter in a wheelchair.

The London Design Museum is hosting an exhibition called “New Old” featuring six designs for the elderly. Among them, there is an electronic muscle dress with an electronic muscle driver at the joints and muscles, which can empower the muscles, help the muscles with atrophy and inconvenient walking to resume the functions of daily walking and standing.

Originally used by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to enhance military physiology, Superflex received $10 million in investment and plans to launch the apparel in the mid-2018s for the elderly and the disabled.

Superflex comes from SRI International, a non-profit research company. The company is best known for Siri, yes, it's Siri on your phone. After a mature investigation into the electronic muscle technology, it was decided to set up a new company to develop robotic technology clothing.

“From an investment point of view, I found that the cost of (robot technology) is declining and the functionality is enhanced. Our focus is on the availability, reliability, and maintainability of this technology.” Manish Kothari, SRI’s head said, “Now It's a good time to move from R&D to business model."

Superflex CEO Rich Mahoney positioned the company as an innovative garment rather than an innovative robot (the robots are not necessarily two arms and two legs, this is a robot attached to the clothes), he does not want the clothes to look like a ward, plan Hire fabric experts and fashion designers to increase the appeal and comfort of the garment.

This time, at the design museum, the prototype of “Energy Clothing” was displayed, working with Yves Béhar's design company Fuseproject. Forbes called Yves Béhar the most influential industrial designer in the world. Fuseproject's business includes brand consulting, creativity, product design, digital design, etc. Future and technology are the main themes of its design. Yves Béhar said, “I believe that the purpose of design is not just to show us the future, but to bring us to the future.”

In the exhibition, we brought us to the future with Yves Béhar's intelligent robot ElliQ, which can be set up with reminders, a medical system, and can connect social media and video calls, to help older people better use technology.

In addition, PriestmanGoode exhibited a scooter that also supported and encouraged the movement of the elderly. Konstantin Grcic designed an outdoor space structure that provides work and reflection.

Mother London has designed a range of spirits packaging, the older the package, the better the wine, designed to break our stereotypes of the elderly. Special Projects designed a special table to arrange for some elderly people over 70 to come to the museum. People can sit down and chat with these old people, ask them questions, and the old people will ask questions. All questions will be recorded on the table.

The six works are themed on ageing, identity, home, community, work and mobility. The exhibition throws us a question: What can the design do in a rapidly aging society?
