Sugarcane is an agricultural economic exporter and host of pathogens. Commercially grown sugarcane varieties require thousands of crossbreedings and eight to ten years of field testing, so even conventional breeding is very difficult.
Genetic transformation of sugarcane is one of the few technologies that can increase sugarcane yield and enhance disease resistance. RAGilbert and his colleagues at the University of Florida undertook the project “The value of genetically modified sugarcane against sugarcane mosaic virus strain E in the production of disease-resistant agricultural products”.
Sugarcane Mosaic Virus (SCMV) is a causative pathogen on sugarcane. Using the untranslatable form of the capsid protein gene of the SCMV strain, transgenic sugarcane CP84-1198 and CP80-1827 were cultivated, and a total of 386 plants were transferred. Field trials have found that the transgenic plants of CP84-1198 have a significant increase in tons per hectare of sucrose (TSH) and a lower incidence of SCMV disease. However, it still mutates in the test transgenic sugar cane. Researchers suggest that transgenic sugarcane requires more field testing to ensure that all plants have the same characteristics.
